read & dish

hello everyone...
we are sitting here sipping our summer book club beverage and in the tradition of book club we sat and talked and ate and talked some more and ate some more and talked about everything but "the blog" but here we are and we have done it!
we are excited to see what will become of it and hope we will enjoy it as much as we do our meetings...this is our opportunity to post our recipes, our favourite quotes and infuse this with all of our personalities ( and without any interruptions!) and in book club fashion also being waited on by the man of the house...
in order for this blog to be as vibrant as we are we need: your thoughts, your rants, your opinions, your recipes and your comments about books, food, music and anything that's on your mind.
love us ( a_ , z_ and s_...thanks t_ for the names)

  6. One can never promo your own book selection too much . . . so, without further ado, here is the "back of the book" that I so stirringly read last night:

"Once in a great while a writer comes along who can truly capture the drama and passion of the life of the family. David James Duncan, author of the contemporary classic The River Why, is just such a writer. And in The Brothers K he tells a story both striking in its originality and poignant in its universality (sounds good to me)."

"This touching, uplifting novel spans decades of loyalty, anger, regret, and love in the lives of the Chance family. A father whose dreams of glory in the baseball field are shattered by a mill accident (may none of your baseball dreams be shattered in the tournament tomorrow . . . !). A mother who clings obsessively to religion as a ward against the darkest hour of her past. Four brothers who come of age during the seismic upheavals of the sixties (I'm guessing there may be drugs) and who each choose their own way to deal with what the world has become. At turns uproariously funny and deeply moving, and beautifully written throughout, The Brothers K is one of the finest chronicles of our lives in many years."

Well, there you are, happy reading.

If you're having a hard time finding the book, I will be ordering one for myself, and currently have one on loan from a friend (so I will have an extra copy). There is (as of today) one on sale at Regent Bookstore, and there are three in the VP Library.

  8. Hi ladies,
I just found a copy of "The Brothers K" at the Book & Comic Emporium on West Broadway just west of Granville St. "The" guy seems to think there might be another copy in his storage...it's amazing how he knew exactly where to look in his over stocked store!
